My Story:

A Journey to Tuc’s Place

My journey to founding Tuc’s Place is deeply personal. My son was diagnosed with a mental illness when he was 18, and as a mother, I was thrown into a world I never expected. I watched as he struggled, self-medicated, and cycled through the justice system. Navigating this journey as an educated woman was overwhelming, and I often wondered how someone battling mental illness and addiction could possibly navigate it alone.

Lisa Casal

I educated myself and did outreach work on the streets, refusing to take no for an answer. There were times I felt completely defeated, but I would pick myself up and continue fighting for my son and for others like him. I realized that my son may never "get back" to who he was, but I could help him find stability and peace in his current situation. I learned to meet him where he was, to see him as he is, and to help him see the possibilities that lie ahead.

Today, I am a certified home care aide and have opened a state-accredited sober living home, with plans to open more. I believe that the first step to recovery is a safe place to live, a place where one can heal without judgment or fear. I no longer hide behind the stigma of mental illness; instead, I have found my mission: to make a difference in people's lives, one safe and supportive home at a time.
